Irmo Fire Commissioner Passes Away


Donald Lee Crain COLUMBIA - Donald Lee Crain, 73, of Columbia, passed away September 30, 2017. Born in Travelers Rest, he was a son of the late Fred Wayne and Madeline Fowler Crain. Mr. Crain served in the US Navy. He served thirty-four years with the SC Highway Patrol and was Trooper of the year in 1978. During his years of service, he worked in Laurens County, York County, and Chester County before moving to Headquarters in Columbia where he served in recruiting and employment until his retirement in 2000. After his retirement he worked for FEMA and TSA. Mr. Crain served as a Fire Commissioner for the Irmo Fire District, was a member of the Irmo Chamber Of Commerce, Active in the Irmo SERTOMA Club, and was a Mason. He enjoyed collecting Military and Police Memorabilia, and never passed up a chance to travel with family and Trooper friends. Surviving is his wife: Delila Edenfield Crain; one daughter: Dr. Frankie Crain-Ruf (Thomas); one sister: Dianne Coleman; and two grandchildren: Eleanor and Elliott Ruf. Along with his parents, he was predeceased by one brother: Douglas Wayne Crain. The family will receive friends Monday evening from 6:00 p.m. until 7:30 p.m. at The Howze Mortuary. Funeral services will be at 11:00 a.m. Tuesday, in The Howze Mortuary Chapel, with Reverend J. Eric Skidmore Officiating. Burial will follow in Mountain View Memorial Park with SC Highway Patrol Honors. The family will be at the home of his sister, Dianne Coleman. Don requested that in lieu of flowers , memorials be made to the SC Troopers Association, 4961 Broad River Rd., Columbia, SC 29212.
